Fort McHenry Tunnel’s right southbound bore will stay closed overnight after an afternoon crash involving three commercial trucks left a trapped driver hospitalized in critical condition, according to officials.
A vacuum truck crashed inside the tunnel about 1:20 p.m. Tuesday and became wedged between a tractor-trailer and a car carrier, authorities said.
The driver of the vacuum truck was trapped inside the vehicle and was extricated by Baltimore firefighters about 3:30 p.m., said Blair Adams, a spokesperson for the Baltimore Fire Department.
The person was taken to the hospital in critical condition, she said. The other two drivers didn’t have injuries and were able to get out of their vehicles on their own. One of them was taken to a hospital for evaluation, she said.
Both southbound bores of the tunnel were shut down after the crash. The tunnel’s left tube reopened about two hours later as traffic was backed up. The right tube will stay closed for routine overnight maintenance, MDTA reported Tuesday evening.
“Our maintenance and facilities team are doing the cleanup and making sure everything’s safer in the tunnel,” said Sgt. Brady McCormick, a spokesman for MDTA Police, and the cause of the crash is under investigation.
