From the Diamond Jubilee to the Platinum Jubilee, Today’s Conveyancer has provided daily news and insight: voting to leave the EU, Dreamvar, the dawn of the Covid-19 pandemic, and everything in between. Here, we take a look back at the website over the last 10 years and beyond.
2010
Going back further than the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, 2020 saw the advent of Today’s Conveyancer. This snapshot of the site sees the relatively recently formed Legal Services Board rule out reinstating a ban on referral fees. 12 years later, referral fees are regulated by the SRA’s 2019 Codes of Conduct. The government also recently confirmed that legislation on referral fees is off the cards for now with respect to estate agents.
2012
Today’s Conveyancer continued to establish itself as a trusted source of news within the industry. Here, the news of the day was the continued growth of the Conveyancing Association, as well as an ethical update from the SRA.
2012
Looking back to 2012 – the year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – Today’s Conveyancer had now undergone its first major redesign. The site was brimming with industry updates from the housing market, reports of fraudulent activity, and comments from the Law Society – three things which are still consistently provided to readers to this day.
2016
Today’s Conveyancer saw the addition of imagery to its front page in 2016. Industry reports continued, though news was dominated by one small topic: Brexit.
Asked “should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?”, 51.9% of the electorate voted yes, much to the shock of Europe and the world.
2018
The site continued to evolve into 2018, with the homepage now laid out in a much clearer fashion, alongside the introduction of a “features” section, replacing “guest blog”.
One of the pre-eminent stories of 2018 was the Dreamvar vs Mishcon de Reya case. This image of the site showed part of the buildup coverage on the site. Weeks later, the Court of Appeal’s judgement sent shockwaves through the industry.
2022
2022 brought the latest renovation of the site with the intention of providing coverage to a wider range of stories. The redesign paved the way for 12 stories to appear on the intitial view of the front page – double that of before. “Opinion” and “editor’s pick” sections were also introduced, as well “Corporate Social Responsibility”, “Support Ukraine” and “Podcast” sections of the site.
In preparation to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee, Union Jack bunting was added to the sites, as well as themed social media logos, a timeline graphic of conveyancing during the Queen’s reign, and a Jubilee-themed cartoon.
Regular columnists continued to attract readers and “the conveyancer’s view” cartoon became a regular feature, as did the Today’s Conveyancer podcast hosted by David Opie.
In addition to the daily coverage of the sector, 2022 also saw the inaugural British Conveyancing Awards brought by Today’s Conveyancer. This saw the conveyancing industry together en masse for the first time in in a celebration of excellence up and down the country.
