An application is under consultation for the demolition of the existing Selleck Dance Studio in Swinburne Road in Abingdon, to be replaced by two five-bedroom detached family homes with a double garage.
Abingdon Dance Studios first started as a business in 1965 but recently moved from its Swinburne Road premises to Larkmead Secondary School and West Wing Studio, both in the town.
A planning statement for the applicant says the new houses are intended to “keep in character of the neighbouring house and surrounding area”.
One anonymous Abingdon parent said: “It’s sad to hear the old dance studios off Swinburne Road are being demolished – it must have been there for years.
“My daughter did freestyle classes there and my son took some ballroom dance classes.
“The premises had no doubt seen better days and I wish the dance tutors all the best – they were always so encouraging and enthusiastic.”
The access road to the site will be extended by 1.2m for one of the proposed three-storey homes which will have dormer windows in the roof.
Pauline Selleck was born in Abingdon, attended Our Ladies Convent, and taught ballroom dancing from 1953.
She ran the full-time dance school in Swinburne Road which her daughter Liz later took over.
