‘Football is about bringing people together’: Mayor Parker calls for rethink on ban on Israel fans at Villa game

Richard Parker spoke of his disappointment at the decision, and said he hoped to work with police, government and club officials to get the matter resolved.

 It was announced on Thursday that supporters of the Israeli club would be banned from attending the Europa League tie at Villa Park over fears of violence.

The decision was made by the Safety Advisory Group, made up of Birmingham councillors and police representatives.

“Football is about bringing people together,” said Mr Parker.

“Everyone who loves the game should have the chance to attend.” 

Mr Parker said the first priority had to be the safety of individuals in and around Villa Park, and he respected the decision of the police.

But he said if the Government was willing to support the force with extra resources, the decision should be reconsidered.

Mr Parker said while his role did not include responsibility for policing in the region, he hoped to be help mediate between the different parties.

“I want to work alongside Aston Villa, the Government, the Home Office, the council and West Midlands Police to broker a solution that keeps the spirit of inclusive and accessible sport alive, whilst ensuring the safety of local people and visitors,” he said.

“I’d like all parties to work together to find a workable solution that can be implemented.”
