Tenants Move Into New Apartment Complex, Then One Week Later Comes an Email

One week after moving into their new apartment, a couple received a complaint email from their property manager—they did not expect what was inside.

In a viral Reddit post shared on Wednesday under the username u/calicooks, the poster explains that, exactly one week after moving into their new apartment complex, they received an email with complaints from their neighbors regarding loud noises and smoking inside.

A screenshot of the email sent by the property manager to the poster reads: “We have recently received several complaints of loud music and smoking coming from your united. All smoking must be done outside at a minimum of 25 ft from the building.

“Please be respectful of your neighbors’ right to quiet enjoyment. These are lease violations of your lease. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.”

However, the poster claims that they don’t even live full-time there yet, and aren’t sure about what these complaints are referring to.

“I haven’t fully moved in or been sleeping inside the apartment myself so I am not sure about how loud the noise level really is. Do you have times where the apparent noise was happening?” reads a screenshot of the poster’s answer.

“My partner works overnight and I haven’t been there so I am not sure what noise the complaints would be referring to. As for the smoking there is absolutely no smoking happening inside the apartment at all. I am not sure where that complain is stemming from.”

Moreover, the poster said that all smoking they are talking about has been done off property, and if there is a stench on their bodies when come inside, there is nothing they can do about it.

“For the record, weed is legal where we live! We just moved to a nice apartment complex, but all of our neighbors are old. I even heard one of them complain of a newborn baby crying like it’s a baby,” the caption says.

“God Forbid people live in their actual apartments. Already thinking of moving next year, [shaking my head]!”

The American Lung Association says that secondhand smoke exposure is common in apartments and condominiums.

It can also cause serious health problems such as lung cancer, heart disease and stroke, and can make asthma worse in adults and children.

In multiunit dwellings, secondhand smoke can seep in from many places, including vents and cracks in walls or floors.

It is estimated about 44 percent to 53 percent of multiunit housing residents that do not allow smoking in their home, have experienced secondhand smoke infiltration from elsewhere in or around the building.

One user, Angry_Ann_, commented: “I moved in for 9 days before my first email complaining about my dog barking 24/7 in my garden I have neither a dog nor a garden but I can indeed hear the dog and it sometimes makes me lose sleep but it’s not from my unit.”

Rich-Geologist5749 posted: “Dogs, smokers, and kids. The trifecta of things you hope are not your neighbors.”

Burtstantonspeaking_ added: “In the future be direct. If it literally wasn’t you or your partner smoking or making the noise then say so. Don’t ask if they were mistaken when you literally know for a fact that they are mistaken. You didn’t violate your lease so say so with some confidence.”
