Aston Villa expert reveals issue regarding Morgan Rogers contract talks

Aston Villa are desperate to tie star man Morgan Rogers down to a new contract but are reportedly facing a big issue that is delaying negotiations.

The 23-year-old’s current deal at the club runs until 2030, but Villa are offering him improved terms to try and ward off interest from the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea.

At the start of the season, Rogers was criticised for a run of poor form, with some questioning his commitment to the Midlands side.

However, in recent weeks the 23-year-old has rediscovered his spark, grabbing goals and assists for Unai Emery’s side.

Morgan Rogers new contract is not done yet

On Sunday (26 October), Football Insider revealed that Rogers was in advanced talks with Aston Villa regarding a new contract.

However, Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that, contrary to reports, the deal is far from over the line.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness revealed that, from what he is hearing, the talks with Rogers aren’t as advanced as they might seem.

Wyness added that Aston Villa are grappling with profit and sustainability rules issues, which could impact getting the England international’s contract extension.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I’m hearing conflicting sides of this. Some are saying that he’s in advanced talks. Some are saying they’re not quite as advanced as they’re being made out to be.

“Look, it would be a big boost if they could tie him down. But, we’ve talked about it many times, Villa have got one eye on PSR and the whole issue around that. So that’ll be part of it. But I think Villa will make every effort to keep him tied down because he’s got real value.

“If they were to get him under a new contract and then he had to be sold at some stage, the valuation obviously would go up. I think they’re going to be pulling every trick they can to try and get him to sign.

“But as I say, I’m hearing it’s not quite as advanced as the media would make us believe just now. It may be Villa trying to scare off any interest in him by saying that they’re in advanced talks. I think there’s certainly discussions going on, but it’s not yet a done deal.”

Aston Villa respond to interest in another star man

Along with their desire to keep Rogers, Aston Villa will not sell Ezri Konsa under any circumstances in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

That is despite the fact that reports have linked Konsa to multiple Premier League clubs in recent weeks.

Man City and Tottenham are among those apparently interested in the England international, following his impressive start to the season.

However, sources say that Villa are desperate to keep hold of Konsa, as he is one of their most important players.
