Aston Villa have reached an agreement in principle with defender Matty Cash over a new contract.
The proposal is for a deal that runs until 2029, with the option of a further 12 months.
Cash’s existing contract is due to expire in 2027 after he last signed fresh terms in April 2022.
The new deal is considered a reward for the full-back’s recent impressive form, with Cash’s pass in the buildup to Emi Buendia’s winning goal against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday receiving widespread praise.
John McGinn is also close to signing a new deal, with The Athletic reporting in August Villa were planning contract discussions with the midfielder.
Cash, 28, featured 38 times for Villa last term and has continued to be a regular under Unai Emery in 2025-26, starting all 11 of Villa’s games across the Premier League, Europa League and Carabao Cup.
“He’s now being consistent for 90 minutes,” Emery said on Sunday. “Sometimes when he was playing matches in a row, he was struggling physically and was getting injured. Now he’s keeping fit very well, not injured, and for 90 minutes, he is being consistent. Now I am not watching him in the 70th minute, in the 80th minute. It is fantastic how he’s getting the balance within himself.”
He has made 191 Villa appearances since his arrival from Nottingham Forest in September 2020. Forest explored a deal to re-sign Cash in August but the proposed move did not progress.
He switched his national team allegiance from England to Poland in 2021 and has made 22 senior international appearances, scoring four times.
‘Cash is integral to Villa’s plans’
Cash has surpassed five years at Villa and has been a reliable performer at the club, with Unai Emery a firm advocate of his qualities.
Playing as an inverted right-back, which means he has to form a back three in possession and limits his attacking qualities, the 28-year-old has had to learn Emery’s remit, but has become trusted by the Spaniard in big matches.
While there was interest from AC Milan last summer, Emery wanted Cash to stay and remain his first-choice right-back. The former Nottingham Forest defender has now entered into the final two years of his current contract, so an extension makes sense for someone who is still integral to Villa’s plans.
