Aston Villa v Maccabi Tel Aviv prediction

Aston Villa will be looking to get back to winning ways on Thursday night in response to falling to two defeats in their last three matches following their loss to Liverpool on Saturday night as well as losing their 100% record in Europe in the Netherlands a fortnight ago.

Unai Emery’s side had won five matches in a row prior to their defeat in Deventer a fortnight ago, and had won six of their last seven before their loss on Merseyside over the weekend, which leaves Villa down in 11th in the Premier League table, but only three points off the top four.

The Villans head into Thursday night’s match having won four home games in a row though and are strong odds on favourites to make that five on the spin against their Israeli opposition this week.

The West Midlands currently find themselves 10th in the league phase standings in the Europa League having opened their campaign with wins over Bologna and Feyenoord preceding their defeat at the Go Ahead Eagles.

Maccabi Tel Aviv make the long trip from Israel having strung together back to back wins following five-match streak without a victory prior, the two-time defending Israeli champions currently second in their league, four points behind Hapoel Beer Sheva with a game in hand.

Zarko Lazetic’s side have only lost once away from home in all competitions this season though so will fancy their chances at an unlikely victory at Villa Park on Thursday night.

Maccabi have struggled in the league phase of the Europa League so far this campaign though despite having won two qualifying rounds to reach the current stage after defeat to Pafos in the Champions League, picking up just one point from their two game so far this season.

Aston Villa are overwhelming favourites for victory on Thursday and should cruise to all three points against far inferior opposition, a scoreline as high as a 4-0 home win not outside the realms of possibility.

Malen on the mark
