Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings is expected to be out with a hamstring injury until 2026.
Mings underwent scans on Monday, which revealed he is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of seven weeks after sustaining the injury during the 2-0 Premier League defeat to Liverpool on November 1.
Mings was introduced for Pau Torres in the 74th minute and pulled up in stoppage-time after sprinting to defend against Mohamed Salah. The 32-year-old clutched the back of his right leg and was visibly in discomfort as he left Anfield.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, manager Unai Emery stated he would be out for “some weeks”.
Mings had just recovered from an ankle injury, sustained in September’s 3-1 win over Fulham, which kept him sidelined for three weeks. He has so far started six times in the league this season and once in the Europa League.
Since the start of the 2023-24 season, Mings has made 31 appearances for Villa. He was out for over a year with an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in August 2023, while also struggling with separate knee issues last season.
Emery has regularly opted to start with the centre-back pairing of Pau Torres and Ezri Konsa this season. Victor Lindelof, who joined as a free agent after his contract expired at Manchester United in the summer, has made five appearances, four of which were coming from the bench.
A frustrating setback
It is a frustrating setback for Mings, who has been an impressive performer when available this season. He is a key dressing room presence and leader on the pitch who had made a remarkable recovery from his second ACL injury suffered in August 2023.
His absence does leave Villa short in central defence, but they do have Lindelof and Lamare Bogarde, who is valued by Emery in part because of his versatility, who can offer depth to the first choice pairing of Konsa and Torres.
Mings signed a new contract in the summer and his professionalism and character has been integral during his time at Villa. He is used to having injury setbacks and works diligently to recover quickly.
