Kick-off 5.45pm
Venue De Adelaarshorst, Deventer

A dreadful start to the season has been forgotten by Aston Villa, whose 2-1 win at Tottenham on Sunday extended their winning run to five.

The Villans’ Premier League form may have been mixed but last season’s Champions League quarter-finalists have once again excelled on the continent, winning their opening two Europa League games to nil.

Unai Emery’s side are strong favourites to maintain their perfect start against Go Ahead Eagles on Thursday, with a Villa win likely in Deventer.

Go Ahead Eagles vs Aston Villa preview

Crisis? What crisis? Unai Emery has quickly silenced those who dared to doubt his credentials after Aston Villa started the season with a six-game winless run by leading his side to five consecutive victories.

The latest in that sequence, Sunday’s 2-1 win at Tottenham, is the most eye-catching result but it is in Europe where Villa have put in their most professional performances, beating a talented Bologna and Eredivisie title contenders Feyenoord to nil.

The Villans made the Champions League quarter-finals last term so it is no surprise to see them enjoying life in Europe’s secondary competition, a tournament Emery has already won four times as a manager.

A fifth triumph is not beyond the Spaniard and he can take another step towards that goal by leading his side to a smooth-sailing victory in Deventer.

Go Ahead Eagles did beat Panathinaikos in their last Europa League match but their 1-0 home loss to FCSB leaves them looking vulnerable heading into a visit from elite opposition.

The Dutch outfit have struggled for consistency this term, winning just three of their 12 matches, and a run of one victory in five home games suggests even home advantage won’t help them pull off a shock.

An untimely injury to striker Victor Edvardsen has only made matters worse for Go Ahead manager Melvin Boel and a fourth defeat in six is imminent.

It could be a case of damage limitation for the Eagles but they should at least succeed in keeping the score down, with Villa, who have seen just one of their last 17 games go over 3.5 goals, keeping one eye on Sunday’s clash with Manchester City.

Brilliant Buendia to have his say

After scoring three goals in his first 44 appearances for the club, Emi Buendia has turned his Aston Villa career around, scoring the same amount in his last four games.

The Argentinian winger has filled the void left by loanees Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio expertly and is averaging a goal or assist every 126 minutes this season.

Buendia started Villa’s last Europa League match, scoring in the victory over Feyenoord, and should be reinstated to the starting 11 after coming off the bench to bag the winner against Tottenham on Sunday.

Suray set for a tough evening

Buendia should start on the left wing for Villa and with Morgan Rogers prone to drifting to that flank and Ian Maatsen the embodiment of a marauding full-back, those on Go Ahead Eagles’ right side look set for a difficult evening.

Right-back Mats Deijl is an obvious card candidate as a result but he tends not to dive in too much, unlike the man in front of him, Mathis Suray.

The Belgian winger has committed 16 fouls in the Eredivisie this term, at least six more than any of his teammates, and a second yellow card in three matches may arrive on Thursday.

Aston Villa to win

The visitors have won their opening two Europa League games without conceding and should maintain their perfect start against an inconsistent Go Ahead Eagles.

Morgan Rogers 1+ shot on target

The England star found the net against Tottenham on Sunday and has managed three shots on target across his last two Villa appearances.

Mathis Suray to be booked

The Belgian winger’s 16 fouls is the joint-ninth most in the Eredivisie this term and he will have to track back regularly to help contain Ian Maatsen and Emi Buendia.
