John McGinn signs new Aston Villa contract to 2028

Aston Villa club captain John McGinn has signed a new contract to keep him at Villa Park until 2028.

This has extended his previous terms by one year after the midfielder signed a four-year contract extension in June 2023.

The Athletic reported in August that Villa were planning to discuss new terms with McGinn, amid interest from rival Premier League clubs. The midfielder is considered a key part of Unai Emery’s project while Everton and, more recently, Newcastle, had shown an interest in the Scotland international over the summer.

McGinn has been a consistent member of Emery’s team as Villa have competed at the top end of the Premier League in recent seasons and he has made an impressive start to the campaign, scoring in their opening two Europa League matches – wins over Bologna and Feyenoord.

He also found the net in the late September 3-1 win over Fulham in the Premier League, with Unai Emery’s side discovering some form after a rocky start to the season.

Last term, McGinn made 49 appearances for Villa, missing just four matches through injury, and played in all but two of his side’s Champions League matches before their quarter-final exit. Villa finished sixth, qualifying for the Europa League.

Villa have been keen to tie down important members of Emery’s squad, having agreed new deals for Boubacar Kamara and Lucas Digne.

McGinn was named as Villa’s captain in July 2022, before Emery arrived at the club, and the pair have a close but frank relationship.

The former Hibernian and St. Mirren midfielder joined Aston Villa in August 2018 as the club prepared for a third successive season in the Championship. He has made 285 appearances since.

The Athletic reported in July that Everton had spoken to Villa this summer about the prospect of signing McGinn, but the Merseyside club were informed he is not for sale. They have since added midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for £25million from Chelsea.
