Lucas Paqueta responds after transfer claim made following collapsed Aston Villa move

Aston Villa targeted a move for Lucas Paquetá in the summer transfer window

Lucas Paquetá is reportedly keen to leave West Ham in the January transfer window, just months after seeing a move to Aston Villa fall through.

Villa were pushing to sign Paquetá before deadline day in the summer, having received encouragement from the player to pursue him.

A move never materialised, with some suggesting that it broke down due to West Ham’s inability to replace the Brazilian so late in the window.

A new report from The Times now claims that Paquetá wants to leave the London Stadium in January following the club’s poor start to the season.

After nine games played, West Ham sit 19th in the Premier League table, having won just one match and collected four points.

Paquetá has started all nine of West Ham’s league games, scoring twice in successive matches — in the 5-1 defeat to Chelsea and then in the 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest — the only real highlight of their campaign so far.

The 28-year-old is contracted to West Ham until 2027 and has continued to feature regularly for Brazil over the past 18 months, despite the Hammers’ struggles since David Moyes’ departure.

It has been claimed that West Ham will need to generate funds in the January window if they are to reshape Nuno Espírito Santo’s squad.

Questions about Paquetá’s future were raised on Tuesday evening, but the midfielder appeared to respond on X (formerly Twitter), posting a smiling emoji alongside a picture of himself with his two sons wearing West Ham kits at the London Stadium.
