Winnipeg police say a man is facing charges in connection to a fire at a condominium on Wednesday.
WPS says around 4:15 p.m., they were alerted to a fire at a condominium along Bannatyne Avenue.
When officers arrived at the scene, they learned that a man in his 30s, who was experiencing mental distress, had attended the lobby and poured gasoline on himself and his surroundings.
Residents of the building were able to evacuate the building, and Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services was already treating the man. He was taken to hospital in unstable condition and was later upgraded to stable.
Through an investigation, police learned that as the man tried to light himself on fire, the building’s sprinkler system was triggered and extinguished the fire.
The man is now facing charges of arson with disregard for human life and three counts of failing to comply with conditions of a release order.
