That was Michael Carrick’s first defeat since being appointed head coach and he will keen to get back to winning ways, especially against a rival for Champions League qualification.

Man Utd have won all four home games under Carrick, scoring at least two goals in each of them and face a Villa side that have struggled since the reverse meeting just before Christmas.

After beating United at Villa Park, claiming a tenth straight win in all competitions, Villa have won just five times in the league, going from potential title challengers to being in danger of missing out on a top-four finish.

That said, Unai Emery’s side did return to winning ways on Thursday evening as they beat Lille 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 meeting.

Opportunity knocks for both sides to strengthen their standing, though, after Chelsea fell to a turgid 1-0 defeat at home to Newcastle on Saturday evening.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Manchester United vs Aston Villa team news

Man Utd defender Lisandro Martinez will miss a fourth game in a row with a calf injury. Matthijs de Ligt and Patrick Dorgu remain sidelined, though the latter could be available for selection at some point in April.

Noussair Mazraoui should be ok despite picking up a knock at St. James’ Park that forced him off late on. Mason Mount could return to the matchday squad after resuming full training after a spell on the sidelines with a knock.

Carrick does have a decision to make in attack as Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko are battling for three spots.

As for Villa, Jadon Sancho cannot feature at Old Trafford as the rules in his loan agreement prevent the winger from facing his parent club.

Matty Cash faces a late fitness test, Boubacar Kamara is a long-term absentee and the game comes too soon for Youri Tielemans, though he is making good progress as he bids to return from injury.

John McGinn is back – ahead of schedule – as he replaced Douglas Luiz to play the final 13 minutes against Lille but may have to settle for a place on the bench again.

Manchester United vs Aston Villa prediction

Man Utd suffered a setback against Newcastle last time out and will be keen to ensure that result was nothing more than a minor blip.

An 11-day break between fixtures could prove crucial here as Villa have been in Europa League action away at Lille and winning that competition may be their best route back into the Champions League next season.
