Mother accused of moving out of apartment while son was at school, leaving him behind

COPPERAS COVE, Texas (KWTX/Gray News) – A mother and her boyfriend are facing charges after being accused of moving out of her apartment and leaving her son behind to fend for himself, according to an affidavit.

Erica Renee Sanders and Keven Dwayne Adams are charged with abandoning and endangering a child without intent to return.

Police were called Oct. 17 to investigate reports of an abandoned child at an apartment complex.

Officers met a 12-year-old boy who said his mother and her boyfriend moved out while he was at school. The boy told officers the apartment was empty when he got home.

A neighbor told police the couple had a history of kicking the boy out.

Officers contacted Sanders and Adams on the phone, and Adams told the officers the boy’s mother had not abandoned him.

Adams, according to police, said Sanders had merely moved in with him and that her son was not welcome at his home.

According to authorities, the couple also told police the boy’s brother was supposed to pick him up after school. Sanders, however, could not provide police contact information for officials to verify her claims.

The affidavit states officers were eventually able to track down the boy’s older brother who had no knowledge he was supposed to pick him up.

Officials with Child Protective Services got involved and reported that Adams and Sanders refused to provide an address to their new home. Investigators had to search utility records to track them down.

The couple was arrested and the 12-year-old was left to stay with his uncle, according to the affidavit.
