What they got
This three-bedroom townhouse with a carport is in the Big White ski resort, about a 45-minute drive from Kelowna.
The ski-in, ski-out unit has a cabinlike feel, featuring an electric fireplace and offering views of the valley from its private hot tub. And it’s cozy, with 1,000 square feet spread over three levels.
The furnished townhouse features a primary bedroom upstairs with a queen bed, an additional bedroom with bunk beds, and a full bathroom.
The lower level includes another bunk room and a full bathroom. There are no rental restrictions in the complex, built in 2003.

The action
Kelowna realtor Richard Deacon bought the unit in 2017 for $262,500, which he saw as great value. He and his wife decided to sell it because their family was spending less time there. They had done updates, including new flooring, a hot tub and furniture.
“When we moved from Vancouver, we couldn’t believe the price,” he said. “This has almost doubled in price in the years we owned it.”
Mr. Deacon tried to sell the property last year but didn’t get any interest. He relisted it this year at the same price, had 10 showings, and received an offer and a backup offer.
The seller’s take
A three-bedroom townhouse under $500,000 is uncommon, so Mr. Deacon wasn’t worried about the unit selling. But getting financing for a recreational property can be tricky, especially when the rental season is short.
“Big White is always a challenge for [bank] appraisals. Not all banks lend up there, because it is hard to make the numbers work.”
The sale was completed on Oct. 30.
