Monroe Township supervisor explains why 19 property rezonings are proposed

Nineteen proposed property rezonings are on the agenda for Nov. 10’s Monroe Charter Township Planning Commission meeting.

Sites proposed for rezoning are scattered across the township, but several are on LaPlaisance Road. Changes include rezonings such as from high density residential to local commercial and from light industrial to heavy industrial.

John Manor, Monroe Township supervisor, explained the need for the rezonings and addressed a couple concerns from residents.

“Approximately half of those changes are corrected zoning from our 2010 Zoning Map. (2010) was the last time it was updated. As you can imagine, much has changed since then and demand has changed for both light industrial properties and multi-family homes (condos) in our community,” Manor said.

The Monroe Charter Township Hall is at 4925 E. Dunbar Road.

Other zoning changes are proposed to follow the township’s master plan.

“Additional changes were also done to more closely follow our township’s Master Plan recommendations and address future growth and development in Monroe Charter Township,” Manor said.

On social media, some residents expressed concerns about rezoning. Some asked if rezoning will permit more cannabis businesses. Monroe Township currently has 18 cannabis businesses.

“Absolutely not,” Manor said. “We are not considering any new cannabis businesses in our township.”

Another resident expressed concern that rezoning will bring industry to “my backyard.”

“We typically do not have industrial properties located in or around residential-zoned properties. The changes and updating for this map will not create any situations where industrial development will conflict or be located in anyone’s ‘backyard,'” Manor said. “We value the quality of life we have in Monroe Charter Township and will continue to safeguard our residents.”

“In order for the township to be more current in our zoning, it was essential we update the 15-year-old map to correct obsolete or changed zoning on affected parcels and rezone additional properties (commercial, industrial and residential) to accommodate future growth and development in our township,” Manor added. “These changes were all consistent with our Master Plan and approved by the affected property owners.”

The Monroe Charter Township Planning Commission meeting begins at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at Monroe Charter Township Hall, 4925 E. Dunbar Road.

Manor said residents with questions are welcome to call the township office.

“I encourage residents to call us with questions regarding any township projects, operations or services,” Manor said. “We are easily reached at 734-241-5501 during township hours, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.”
