BELOIT, Wis. — A firefighter was injured after combating a fire on Beloit’s east side early Monday morning, Sarah Lock, the city’s director of strategic communication, said.
Fire crews were called to the 2300 block of Bookmaker Drive at 2:13 a.m. for a report of a duplex on fire.
Three children were accounted for upon the fire department’s arrival, although they were not home at the time of the fire.
The Town of Beloit and Janesville fire departments assisted during this incident, and one firefighter from the City of Beloit sustained injuries during a structural collapse.
A “Mayday” event was initiated, requiring the fire department to assist the injured firefighter out of the building. They were treated and has since been released from the hospital.
According to Lock, the building is uninhabitable as a result of extensive fire damage. The American Red Cross has been assisting with emergency needs for the occupants.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation but appears to be accidental. A damage estimate is not yet available.
