Health department orders Mims mobile home park owner to fix leaking, caved-in septic tanks
MIMS, Fla. – There’s hope, finally, for people at a Brevard County mobile home park that a smelly situation could finally get fixed.
A week ago, Correll Circle residents showed Mims Community Correspondent James Sparvero several areas that were blocked off due to septic leaks and cave-ins.
Neighbors said they’d been living with raw sewage in their yards for more than a year.
This week, new inspection reports from Brevard County’s health department listed a number of health violations.
While it reads that the septic tanks are failing, the report also stated the owner of the mobile home park is finally working to fix the septic systems.
“Owner of the park has hired a septic contractor, and they are moving forward towards septic tank repair permitting after corresponding with septic department,” the health department reported.
In the meantime, the leaks and cave-ins are still there, like in Lori Makey’s yard.
She said she’s worried about flushing the toilet.
“This morning, my husband had to go to the bathroom, and it came up in our tub,” Makey said. “The thought of that, and him being exposed to that, I just could cry. It’s not right, for sure.”
As upsetting as that was, Makey said she’s encouraged to learn the owner is getting the ball moving to fix the system.
“He’s got 30 days,” she said. “So I’m super happy to hear that we’ve got a plan in place. I’m really grateful to you guys, to News 6, for you, for just bringing this story to light.”
The owner of the park blamed the county for how long it’s taking to fix the problem.
The health department said it doesn’t comment on open investigations.
The owner also said his long-term plan for the park is to convert it from septic to sewer.
