Officials investigating Patterson condo that caught fire after police standoff


Putnam County officials are investigating a fire that destroyed two Patterson apartment units following a police standoff Thursday, Oct. 16.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said police responded to an apartment at the Fox Run Condominiums in Patterson around 5 p.m. Thursday, following reports of a man dressed in camouflage barricaded inside a residence and claiming to having an explosive device.

Police said the suspect allegedly menaced a neighbor with what appeared to be a firearm, then barricaded himself in the apartment.

Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Special Response and Hostage Negotiations teams spent over three hours attempting to remove the man from the residence.

At around 9:30 p.m., the man was removed from the building. Upon inspection of the building, officers found a fire inside the apartment. Police said it remains unclear whether the fire was started intentionally or by accident.

Patterson firefighters spent several additional hours on the scene attempting to control the fire. Two units were damaged as a result. No injuries were reported.

Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public and the investigation remains ongoing.
