The oldest house in this N.J. county is on the market, and its owners are eager to sell

Little is known about the history of this historic home in Phillipsburg.

But Maria F. McDonough, of Coldwell Banker Realty, says it is the oldest home in Warren County.

Built in 1750, it has hand hewn beams, stone fireplaces, pine floors, chair rails and beaded window and door trims.

“You couldn’t build a home like this today,” McDonough said. “It’s a beautiful home, with the quality of the workmanship.”

A large, two-story barn on the 1.59 acre lot was used as an antique store for many years and the current owners use it to host antique auctions. The property’s zoning allows residential and commercial uses, she said.

It was listed Sept. 2 for $450,000 and then the price was reduced to $399,000 on Oct. 8.

The median sale price of a home in Phillipsburg was $326,000 in September, according to Redfin.

“They want to sell it before the winter comes,” McDonough said.

The first floor of the home has a living room and a dining room, both with fireplaces and another room that could be used as an office or converted into a bedroom. It also has the kitchen and a full bathroom, the only one in the house. A sunroom was added off the kitchen in the 1980s.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms, both accessible through Jersey Winder staircases.

A second smaller barn on the property could be used as a garage.

The home backs to a horse farm. “You’re in the country out here,” she said, adding that the home sits on Route 31 and is “a minute from town.”

The yard is “very gracious with big trees,” McDonough said. “You don’t see anybody.”
