Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has appointed two consultants to help the civic body complete the work of Nisargakavi Bahinabai Zoo. One of the two consultants has been appointed to ensure that the civil works are favourable for the animals. The other, an animal expert, will help PCMC maintain the animals and bring in new ones. Both of them have been appointed for two years so that the work is completed on priority and the zoo can be opened, said an official.“To apply for the job, the animal expert should have had 20 years of experience in reptiles and aviaries, and the other consultant must have worked previously as a zoo advisor,” Sandip Khot, PCMC deputy commissioner told TOI.The zoo, currently houses 184 animals and was closed to public since Dec 2017 following the Central Zoo Authority of India’s (CZAI) recommendation for necessary structural changes.The state govt in Dec 2023 had directed the civic body to handover the zoo’s operations to the Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (FDCM). BJP MLA Ashwini Jagtap had alleged in the assembly session that animals had died due to delay in completing work. The CM clarified that some of these animals had died of natural causes, and others due to weather changes, as per postmortem reports. “Govt has asked us to make the zoo operational on priority. Once it starts, a decision to handover the operations to FDCM will be implemented,” a PCMC official said.The civic body had earlier terminated the previous advisor after the CZAI raised objections on the structure of the zoo. “Around 70% of the work is done. The remaining is likely to be completed in around 1.5 years. The work order for the remaining work will be floated in 1.5 month with consultation from both the advisors,” said Manoj Sethia, joint city engineer of PCMC.
