SUNDOWN — The New Home girls and Ropes boys added an area championship to their district title Wednesday at Slaughter Field.
The Leopards won the Districts 5/6-2A girls title with 157 points, followed by Wink with 135 and Tahoka with 105. Ropes notched 110 points to beat out Wink (101) on the boys side. Plains followed in third with 90.
The Whiteface girls and Whitharral boys each topped the Districts 7/8-1A standings in tight fashion. The Antelopes totaled 128 points to edge Lenorah Grady by two. Loop was third with 101. The Panthers topped Whiteface 129-121 on the boys side, followed by Klondike with 89.
New Home’s Nevin Mojica looking for regional ‘redemption’
Nevin Mojica still thinks about how his regional meet went last season. The memory isn’t uplifting.
The New Home senior never got to see how he stacked up in the 200 meters. Shortly after coming out of the blocks, Mojica pulled his hamstring. He finished the race but was last in the prelims.
“It took a toll on me,” Mojica said. “I was very sad, but I knew it would take more to get there this year. I’m willing to do whatever it takes and push my way through anybody and everybody. …
“I still think about it every day, but you’ve got to move on from it at some point.”
Now is the perfect time. Mojica will make his fourth regional appearance in the 200 next week after winning the event in 22.65 seconds Wednesday.
He’s hoping the comeback ends with a storybook first trip to the state meet.
“It’s sad, but it is what it was,” Mojica said. “I get a redemption year this year, and I’m ready to do it.”
Mojica also won the 100, an event he hadn’t run since his freshman year. His personal-record 10.93 bested runner-up Zane Garvin (11.11) of Tahoka.
The recovery in between races is spent drinking fluids and stretching. All the while Mojica has a preferred musician to get him prepared.
“A lot of Mac Miller,” Mojica said. “He keeps me calm, gets me in the mindset. He’s a great artist, and he gets me where I need to be.”
Loop’s Kamryn Dyck dealing with pressure after double gold at state
Freshmen at the state meet can be overwhelmed by the stage, but that was far from the case for Kamryn Dyck.
The Loops athlete had goals of making the podium in her debut last year — “or just get like, fifth.” All she did was win gold in the 100 and long jump.
That set high expectations for Dyck, who is striving to exceed those, too. She took the next step by winning both events Wednesday.
“It’s definitely a lot of pressure on myself,” Dyck said, “wanting to meet those requirements and do better than I did last year.”
Dyck said she “could have done better” at area, even though both marks bested her state results. She breezed to a 100 win in 12.56 and reached 16 feet, 11 inches in long jump.
At state, Dyck ran a 12.59 in the 100 and long-jumped 16-9¼. She’s one meet away from trying to improve both.
“I’m gonna try my best to win,” Dyck said. “I want to PR in both the 100 and long jump, so those are my goals this year.”

As the line between sports analysis and sports gambling content continues to blur, ESPN finds itself in a tricky gray area, especially with the recent launch of ESPN Bet, the network’s own sports betting platform.
ESPN host Rece Davis on Sunday offered a clarification for a comment he made earlier on “College GameDay” during a conversation with ESPN Bet analyst Erin Dolan.
Davis contended that “most recognized my comment was tongue-in-cheek” when he said Dolan’s advice to bet the under on Northwestern’s point total in its upcoming men’s basketball tournament game against Connecticut was “a risk-free investment.”
“Obviously, there are risks,” Davis wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “Though I’m not a gambler, I strongly encourage those who do partake, do so with prudence, care, caution, fiscal and personal responsibility and never over-extend.”
The timing of Davis’ remark was unfortunate, coming on the heels of a brewing scandal in Major League Baseball over alleged illegal gambling activities by superstar Shohei Ohtani’s longtime interpreter.
Predictably, Davis faced a barrage of criticism on social media shortly after the segment aired, with one commenter pointing out that even sports betting companies in many states aren’t allowed to use the term “risk-free” in their ads anymore.
SAN ANTONIO — Brazos Beck lived New Home basketball.
In his final game wearing the mantra on his back, Beck did exactly as asked. He played HST — hard, smart and together with his teammates.
Whether it was diving into the scorer’s table to chase a loose ball or returning after a tweaked ankle late in regulation, Beck did coach Koby Abney proud.
It showed on Abney’s face as he choked up talking about his longtime bench companion.
“It’s going to feel weird to, next year, turn around and Brazos not be somewhere on our sideline, because it’s been a long time,” Abney said of the former sixth-grade manager. “And this could be any one of our kids … he’s just a phenomenal kid. He comes from a great family. He’s a godly, Christian man. He’s a leader. He leads the right way. He’s a young man that, if he was dating your daughter, you’d be ecstatic. …
“He is everything that we want someone to be a part of our program to be. … He’s everything HST ought to be.”
Beck finished with eight points, five rebounds, two assists and five steals in Thursday’s heartbreaking overtime loss to Lipan. His impact wasn’t entirely printed on the box score.
The New Home captain had the dubious honor of following Lipan’s top scorer, Court Gaylor. Beck also willed his team in tough moments, despite aggravating a bothersome ankle. He exited for 41 seconds late in the fourth quarter.
There wasn’t going to be anything keeping him off the floor. The time with his teammates was too precious.
Beck experienced a lot with New Home. Two state-tournament appearances and four district championships were part of the fun. He even got to watch an 80-game district winning streak and add to it once he got to high school.
That ended this season, but the result became a blessing. The loss to Plains gave the Leopards areas to work on, improvements that boosted New Home back to the Alamodome.
Abiding by HST didn’t hurt, either.
The way Beck displayed that, especially in his swan song, will be a shining example for the future.
“It was fun … full of ups and downs,” Beck said of his senior campaign. “… Glory to God because we’re here. And not many people get to do that.”
SAN ANTONIO — After the longest two minutes of either coach’s career, referees ruled New Home’s apparent game-winner came after the buzzer.
The Leopards had possession with 0.3 seconds and Caleb Cook converted his shot. But after review, the referees deemed it late in a 40-39 overtime win by Lipan in a Class 2A state semifinal Friday at the Alamodome.
It was the second crucial play at the buzzer, as regulation ended with a missed 3-pointer by Lipan’s Court Gaylor.
New Home defense up bright and early
The Leopards defense got an early wake-up call and responded. New Home had four steals as part of five forced turnovers in the opening period to take a 9-8 lead.
Lipan’s Court Gaylor got loose for a string of three consecutive 3s in the second quarter to build a 22-12 advantage, but the Leopards clamped down the final 3 minutes, 52 seconds of the half.
New Home forced three turnovers during a 7-0 run to close the second quarter. Lipan attempted one shot in the stretch and held a 22-19 edge.
The Leopards finished with 17 points off 18 turnovers.
Caleb Cook, Court Gaylor duel on offense
Cook, whose first five points gave the Leopards an early 9-6 advantage, led a balanced attack on offense. He scored eight points in the first half then added seven in the third quarter.
Cook had five consecutive points in the third period to give New Home its largest lead at 33-27. He finished with a team-high 17 points.
Gaylor did it in a different fashion but powered Lipan. The freshman son of coach Brent Gaylor made five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 27 points.
New Home continues quest for first state final
In the program’s third state tournament, the Leopards were agonizingly close to their first title bout.
Lipan ousted New Home last year, and Moulton did the deed in 1989. The Bobkatz beat the Leopards 65-61 in New Home’s first semifinal appearance. The Leopards’ three defeats have all been within eight points.
OXFORD — A path cluttered by progress led the way to the Ole Miss Softball Stadium, where the Rebels played for the first time since the commencement of a $32 million construction project on Friday.
The softball diamond itself and its immediate surroundings looked pristine, and the product it housed wasn’t far off. Ole Miss spent seven innings flashing the leather on its way to a 2-0 win over Southeastern Louisiana that earned the Rebels (12-4) their first victory in their new digs. The second impression was less positive ‒ Ole Miss closed out Friday’s play with a 6-4 loss to UAB.
“It’s always nice to win on your home field, especially when you’re kind of breaking it in,” Rebels coach Jamie Trachsel said postgame. “I think there’s definitely some excitement, some nerves, some adrenaline. So it took us a little bit to settle in. To come out here and get a win, we got that forever in the record book.”
The project surrounding the diamond is still very much ongoing.
A temporary blue fence and orange barriers shielded onlookers from the active construction areas. Upturned dirt, tarps and rocks lined the space where new seating structures – among other things – are still being built.
For the 2024 season, fans will be confined to a single stand positioned in right-center field.
“Obviously, the field is game-ready,” Trachsel said. “They’ll continue working on kind of the interior, the exterior, team room, locker room, athletic training, coaches offices. There’s going to be the grandstand behind home plate. Pretty much everything will move over here as a program.”
The list of new bells and whistles includes light show capabilities on the lighting structures, similar to what Ole Miss fans may have seen at Swayze FIeld after home runs hit by the baseball team this year.
The Rebels didn’t hit a homer during their first game Friday, but the victory provided all the justification necessary to test the new feature.
The driving force behind the win was Makenna Kliethermes, who pitched five scoreless innings and allowed just two hits while collecting six strikeouts. Aynslie Furbush followed with two innings of shutout relief.
“I think has been really, really consistent,” Trachsel said. “I think that’s one thing. A lot of different people have been consistent, too. Proud of our defense tonight. We needed to play a clean game.”
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:Where Ole Miss women’s basketball stands in updated March Madness bracket predictions
Ole Miss has reached a regional final in each of Trachsel’s three full seasons in charge, but the Rebels have not qualified for a super regional since 2019.
They’ll be looking to achieve a better SEC finish than what they managed last season, too. Ole Miss went 8-16 in conference play after finishing 12-12 in the prior two seasons. The Rebels begin their SEC slate when rival Mississippi State comes to Oxford next weekend.
“I think we just need to keep getting better,” Trachsel said. “I think putting a full performance together where we’re pitching well and doing our job defensively and our offense is on the same page too. I think we’ve had a lot of times where we’ve had one or the other.”
